Position Statement of the Liberia Diplomatic Think Tank in Support of Liberia's Bid for a Non-Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2025-2027

The Liberia Diplomatic Think Tank proudly endorses the Government of Liberia's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2026-2027. We believe that Liberia's unique historical context, combined with its proactive engagement in regional and international peace and security efforts, uniquely positions Liberia to contribute significantly to the Council's mandate.

LiDTT is convinced that this endeavor calls for the collective support of every Liberian regardless of differences. This initiative stands to promote Liberia and its citizens’ image and provide recognition at the regional, continental, and global levels. To its bilateral and multilateral partners, Liberia has emerged from a period of conflict to become a beacon of peace and reconciliation in West Africa, evidenced by your long-standing supports. Liberia's journey from civil war to peace offers valuable insights into conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction, which are central to the UNSC's objectives.

Liberia's commitment to peace is evidenced by its active participation in peacekeeping missions and its efforts to foster regional stability through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). To the United Nations, Liberia has consistently supported UN initiatives aimed at enhancing global security and upholding the fundamental values of the UN. Liberia has been an advocate for the prevention of conflicts, the protection of civilians, and the promotion of human rights.

A seat on the UNSC would allow Liberia to further these efforts by contributing to the formulation of policies that address contemporary security challenges, including terrorism, climate-related conflicts, and transnational organized crime in the region, continent, and the world at large. Liberia is dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By securing a seat on the UNSC, Liberia aims to bridge the gap between security and development, advocating for policies that recognize the interlinkages between peace, security, and sustainable development. Liberia's voice on the Council would emphasize the importance of addressing root causes of instability, such as poverty and inequality, to foster lasting peace and security mechanisms.

To the African Union (AU), Liberia, as a member state, its presence on the UNSC would strengthen Africa's voice reflective of AU’s interest in global peace and security issues. Liberia is committed to working collaboratively with other African nations to ensure that the continent's priorities are reflected in the Council's agenda during its tenure.

Finally, the Liberia Diplomatic Think Tank firmly calls on every Liberian and bilateral and multilateral partner to support Liberia's bid and look forward to its contribution to a more peaceful and just world.
